Samàna Bay

 

This big peninsula of nearly 1000 km², rich in picturesque and bewitching landscapes, form one of the most beautiful areas of the Dominican Republic.

From east to west it is crossed by the hill-chain of Samàna, in which some peaks are more than 500 metres high. Plunging abruptly in the blue ocean waters, these hills contribute to the charm of the area. More, their sides have a surprising and various vegetation. This hill landscape act as a counterbalance to the wonderful white-sand beaches hugging the north and south shores of Samàna.

Few places in the world have a marriage between hills and beaches, cities and countrysides, like the Samana peninsula.

Every year, from January to March, whales come in the bay to multiply. February is the best month to assist this unique show. To court their partner, the males jump with their weight of 30-40 tons, making big splashes in the water. The females and minors also do acrobatics. It's possible to watch these scenes from the shore with binoculars, but nothing is better than to use a boat to meet the cetaceans.
